Sheffield Design Week is a citywide celebration of design in all its forms. Sheffield Design Week is a collaborative platform aiming to increase awareness and appreciation of design and develop new audiences. It offers both cultural and commercial opportunities, showcasing established and emerging design talent and innovative projects.
Sheffield Design Week is hosted in one of the UK’s most creative cities. Taking place annually, this week long festival plays host to an array of local, regional, national and international design, architectural and creative names. It showcases all disciplines of design, from graphic design to architecture, advanced manufacturing and technology to fashion and product design and more. We promote an exciting, varied programme, including exhibitions, workshops, talks, design conferences, installations, product launches, open studios and walking trails. The week’s worth of activity will join together venues across Sheffield and beyond in the 2016 celebration.
Design City is the theme for 2016
Sheffield Design Week 2016 will see a broad and varied range of design activity taking place in venues, spaces and places. This will range from small scale workshops, talks and installations through to a design industry conferences, workshops, talks and exhibitions. The schedule brings together a wide variety of partnerships with venues, event organisers and industry experts from across the north and beyond, intersecting frequently with manufacture and craft.
The programme will feature both the Offset conference with leading influencers from this design sector and an engaging conference with Sheffield Hallam University that draws together speakers and delegates from across design, craft and manufacturing to explore a core theme of ‘Design City’. We will examine what goes into making a dynamic city and how design can shape and influence a strong cultural identity embracing a rich history of innovation and creativity.
The theme of the festival in 2016 allows individuals and organisations to contribute their own design stories around city development. Previous Sheffield Design Week themes have included ‘Can Design Save the World’ and ‘Transformation’ themes that look at how different design approaches can solve social needs and respond to challenges. In 2016 the festival will look at how the whole city can work with and utilise design to improve public service, build better houses, improve transport and increase community engagement.public discourse on the place and contribution of design in contemporary society.
A range of installations, events and talks will be held establishing the role and contribution of design to a 21st century society.
““2016 seems a great opportunity to discuss Sheffield in the context of being a Design City. From a history fuelled by creative endeavour and invention; from being the birthplace of stainless steel to the 1960’s rethinking of public space that resulted in Europe’s largest listed building at Park Hill and the current rise of digital making and manufacture, Sheffield is a contemporary environment with extraordinary levels of innovation and creativity in design and technology sectors”
Patrick Murphy, Director. Sheffield Design Week
