Offset Sheffield – 2 days of design inspiration
We are getting excited at the prospect of Offset, Dublin’s annual conference of design, coming to Sheffield for 2 days of thought provoking, inspirational content on the 21st and 22nd October at the Crucible.
Offset began in 2009 and has brought together leading figures from across the design world – in Sheffield there will be 18 speakers including designers from Droga5, Ian Anderson, Ben Bos, MPC, Hudson-Powell/Pentagram and Moving Brands, as well as visual artists, and Jens Kronvold Frederisken – the Chief Designer on LEGO Star Wars!
This years event graphics have been created alongside three design graduates from Sheffield Hallam University. Gemma Milne, Andrew Robinson and Aliss Curtis all studied at the Sheffield Institute of the Arts and were flown to Dublin to work with the Offset team to develop ideas.
We caught up with Creative directors Bren Byrne and Lisa Haran to find out more about Offset in advance of next weeks conference.
When did you start OFFSET?
Offset first event was in Dublin in 2009 following a number of years running smaller single night events.
It has grown from 450 attendees in its first year to regular crowds of over 2500 for our Dublin event every year with visitors coming from all over the world.
How would you describe it?
Sometimes we make the parallel to a music festival but for design.
We don’t set a theme, the creatives giving presentations are free to talk and show what they want. We curate based on who we want to meet and hang out with as well as how much we love their work.
We choose speakers from a range of disciplines as that reflects our own interests and backgrounds. Its informal but inspiring at the same time. Both the speakers and audience are warm and open, with no VIP rooms, everyone mingles a collegiate way.
What do you do when your not being the creative vision of OFFSET?
Well we used to be an illustrator (Bren) and TV/Web Graphics (Lisa) as well as running a small boutique agency, but now we are both full time on OFFSET.
It’s amazing to welcome Offset to Sheffield this year. What attracted you away from Dublin?
Dublin is still our home, but we have so many people coming from the UK for our event in Dublin that we felt it might be nice to go visit them. We did London last year and it was great fun, we have some connections in Sheffield so it felt natural. Sheffield immediately felt like home when we visited and so far we have been overwhelmed by the reception the city has given us. We can’t wait for the doors open in The Crucible and we can share what we do with a new audience.
What one thing are you most looking forward to at the conference in Sheffield.
Getting to the interval on the first day is great as usually if we can get there without any hiccups then we can relax the rest of the time. Personally certain speakers are going to be exciting to meet such as Jens the design director of LEGO Star Wars or Felix and Alex from NYC agency Droga5 or Dutch design legend Ben Bos. But also some of our friends are on the lineup this year so it will fun to see them on stage and share their talent with the audience in Sheffield.
